What is the name of McDonald's purple blob character?

McDonald’s purple blob character is named Grimace.

Grimace joined the McDonaldland cast in 1971, originally appearing as “Evil Grimace,” a four-armed character who stole milkshakes and soft drinks. McDonald’s soon redesigned him as a friendly, clumsy purple companion with two arms, and the word “Evil” was dropped from his name.

For decades, Grimace appeared alongside Ronald McDonald, the Hamburglar, Birdie the Early Bird, and Mayor McCheese in television commercials and other promotions. His exact identity has never been entirely consistent: company representatives have described him as the embodiment of a milkshake or even a taste bud, while other marketing presents him simply as a lovable monster from Grimace Island.

Grimace became especially prominent again in 2023, when McDonald’s introduced a berry-flavored Grimace Shake for his birthday. Online videos about the shake created a viral meme, bringing a character from McDonald’s older advertising universe to a new generation.
