Mayor McCheese is the McDonald’s corporate character who appeared as the mayor of McDonaldland.
McDonaldland was a fictional setting introduced in McDonald’s advertising during the early 1970s. Its characters personified menu items and restaurant themes, creating a colorful world aimed primarily at children. Mayor McCheese had a large cheeseburger-shaped head, a formal suit, and a mayoral role within that setting.
The character appeared alongside Ronald McDonald and other figures such as the Hamburglar, Grimace, and Captain Crook. Mayor McCheese was not the same character as the restaurant’s Big Mac mascot; the two were related to McDonald’s food branding but had different designs and roles.
McDonaldland characters became less prominent as McDonald’s advertising strategy changed. The fictional world remains an important part of the chain’s branding history, especially its early family-focused campaigns.
