What is the name of Mamá Imelda's spirit guide alebrije?

The story behind the answer

Mamá Imelda’s spirit guide alebrije is Pepita.

In Coco, Pepita is a fantastical guardian who accompanies Imelda in the Land of the Dead. Although she first appears as a brightly colored feline-like creature, her alebrije form combines several powerful animals: a jaguar’s head, torso, and front paws; a ram’s horns; an eagle’s wings and hind legs; and an iguana’s tail.

Pepita is often confused with Dante, Miguel’s dog and another alebrije. Dante’s spirit-guide form is also fantastical, but Pepita is specifically associated with Mamá Imelda. The film uses these creatures to connect Mexican folk-art traditions with its imagined afterlife.

The word “alebrije” refers to colorful Mexican folk-art creatures, especially figures associated with the artistic tradition developed by Pedro Linares in the 20th century. Coco adapts that idea into animal spirit guides who help characters navigate the Land of the Dead.
