Smokey is Lightning McQueen's veteran racing mentor in Pixar's Cars 3.
Lightning meets Smokey in Thomasville, a small town connected to the history of the Fabulous Hudson Hornet. Smokey was Doc Hudson's crew chief and close friend during Doc's racing career. He helps Lightning understand that Doc's legacy was not defined only by wins or losses.
Smokey's coaching focuses on observation, adaptability, and the importance of working with a team. He helps Lightning train in ways that differ from the high-tech simulator methods used at the Rust-eze Racing Center. The Thomasville sequence also introduces Lightning to several older racers connected with Doc, including Louise Nash and Junior Moon.
Smokey is voiced by Chris Cooper. His role is distinct from Cruz Ramirez, who begins as Lightning's trainer and later becomes his protégé. Smokey provides historical perspective and emotional guidance, helping Lightning decide how to continue racing while honoring the mentor who shaped his career.
