What is the name of Lewis Carroll's birthplace village in Cheshire?
Answer
Daresbury
Answer
Daresbury
Lewis Carroll was born in Daresbury, a village in Cheshire, England. His birth name was Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, and he was born on 27 January 1832 at All Saints’ Vicarage, where his father was the rector.
Daresbury remained important to Carroll’s legacy even though he spent much of his later life elsewhere. When he was 11, his family moved to Croft-on-Tees in Yorkshire, and he later studied and worked at Christ Church, Oxford. There he became a mathematician, logician, photographer, clergyman and writer.
A common mix-up is confusing Carroll’s birthplace with places associated with his education or death. Oxford was central to his adult career, while Guildford, Surrey, was where he died in 1898. Chester is a nearby major city, but it was not his birthplace. Daresbury’s All Saints’ Church now includes stained-glass windows celebrating Carroll and characters from Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland.
