What is the name of Le Corbusier's student dormitory at the Cité Universitaire in Paris?
Answer
Pavilion Suisse
Answer
Pavilion Suisse
Le Corbusier’s student dormitory at Paris’s Cité Universitaire is Pavilion Suisse, also known as the Fondation Suisse.
Le Corbusier and his cousin and collaborator Pierre Jeanneret designed the building for Swiss students at the Cité Internationale Universitaire de Paris. The project was developed around 1930–31 and constructed in the early 1930s, opening in 1933 as a residence rather than as an exhibition pavilion.
Pavilion Suisse gave Le Corbusier a compact setting in which to apply his modernist principles to collective housing. The dormitory combines a four-story residential slab raised on pilotis with communal spaces at ground level. Its design also explores the free plan, free façade, roof terrace, and extensive glazing associated with his Five Points.
The French name matters here: “Pavillon Suisse” means “Swiss Pavilion,” while “Fondation Suisse” is the building’s institutional name. It is easily confused with the later Pavillon Le Corbusier in Zurich, a separate building completed in the 1960s and now used as a museum.
