What is the name of Le Corbusier's house in La Plata, Argentina?
Answer
Casa Curutchet
Answer
Casa Curutchet
Le Corbusier’s house in La Plata, Argentina, is called Casa Curutchet.
The house was commissioned in 1948 by Pedro Domingo Curutchet, a surgeon who wanted a residence with a medical consulting room. Construction began in 1949 and was completed in 1953 under the supervision of Argentine architect Amancio Williams. It is built on a narrow urban lot facing the Paseo del Bosque park.
Casa Curutchet is notable for adapting Le Corbusier’s principles to an existing Argentine city setting. Its design includes pilotis, a free plan, a free façade, ribbon windows, a roof terrace, a ramp and a courtyard separating the house from the clinic. A brise-soleil shades the main façade.
A common mix-up is confusing it with Antoni Gaudí’s Casa Milà or Casa Batlló, both in Barcelona. Casa Rosada is also in Argentina, but it is the famous government building in Buenos Aires, not Le Corbusier’s La Plata residence. Casa Curutchet became part of the UNESCO-listed group of Le Corbusier works in 2016.
