What is the name of King Lear's youngest daughter?
Answer
Cordelia
Answer
Cordelia
Cordelia is the youngest daughter of King Lear.
She is also Lear’s favorite child, the youngest of his three daughters, and the only one who refuses to flatter him during the opening scene. When Lear asks his daughters to declare how much they love him before dividing his kingdom, Cordelia answers honestly rather than offering an elaborate speech.
Lear interprets her restraint as disobedience and banishes her. The King of France, impressed by her honesty, marries her, while the Duke of Burgundy withdraws his suit. Her sisters Goneril and Regan remain in Britain and make grand declarations of love, but later turn against their father.
Cordelia returns with an army to help Lear after his daughters reject him. Shakespeare’s tragedy ends with her capture and death, though later adaptations changed the outcome. Nahum Tate’s 1681 version, which dominated the stage for generations, gave the story a happier ending in which Cordelia survived and married Edgar. Miranda is from The Tempest, while Goneril and Regan are Lear’s elder daughters.
