Gandalf is the wizard who guides the Fellowship of the Ring in J.R.R. Tolkien’s story.
Known as Gandalf the Grey for much of The Lord of the Rings, he investigates Bilbo’s mysterious ring and recognizes its connection to Sauron. He helps persuade Frodo to leave the Shire and later joins the Fellowship formed to protect the Ring-bearer and oppose the Dark Lord.
Gandalf falls while battling the Balrog on the Bridge of Khazad-dûm and returns as Gandalf the White. Saruman is another wizard who becomes an enemy, while Radagast is a separate wizard associated with animals and the wild. The five Istari sent to Middle-earth also included the two mysterious Blue Wizards, whose names and deeds receive less attention in the main narrative.
