What is the name of J.R.R. Tolkien’s wife, whom he married in 1916?

The story behind the answer

J.R.R. Tolkien’s wife, whom he married in 1916, was Edith Bratt.

Tolkien met Edith Bratt when he was a teenager, and their relationship began in Oxford during the period after his mother’s death. Tolkien’s guardian, Father Francis Morgan, initially restricted contact between them while Tolkien was preparing for university and military service. Tolkien and Edith renewed their relationship after that restriction ended, became engaged in 1913, and married at St Mary Immaculate Roman Catholic Church in Warwick on 22 March 1916.

Edith influenced Tolkien’s imagination as well as his personal life. He later connected her with the fictional character Lúthien, an elf-maiden whose story involves love, sacrifice, and a mortal man. Their gravestone in Wolvercote Cemetery uses the names Beren and Lúthien for Tolkien and Edith. Edith and Tolkien had four children: John, Michael, Christopher, and Priscilla. Christopher later became the principal editor of many posthumously published Tolkien texts.
