What is the name of J.R.R. Tolkien’s invented language used by the Rohirrim?

The story behind the answer

The invented language used by the Rohirrim in J.R.R. Tolkien’s linguistic fiction is Rohirric. Tolkien generally represents it in The Lord of the Rings through Old English forms and vocabulary.

The Rohirrim are the horse-riding people of Rohan, and their culture is closely connected with the language’s Germanic flavor. Names such as Éomer, Théoden, Éowyn, and Meduseld evoke Old English, while the language of Gondor is often represented through a more modern English register.

Tolkien’s presentation creates the impression that the characters are speaking their own language while the narrative supplies an English translation. Rohirric is therefore not simply identical to historical Old English, even though Tolkien uses Old English as its literary representation. Westron, the Common Speech of Middle-earth, is likewise rendered as English in much of the narrative.
