Hobbiton is the fictional Shire village where Bilbo and Frodo Baggins live in J.R.R. Tolkien’s stories.
The settlement lies in the Westfarthing of the Shire and is built around Hobbiton Hill. Bilbo’s home, Bag End, is a comfortable smial dug into the hill, and Frodo later inherits it. The village is the starting point for Bilbo’s journey in The Hobbit and Frodo’s quest in The Lord of the Rings.
Hobbiton is sometimes confused with the Shire itself. The Shire is the larger region inhabited by Hobbits, while Hobbiton is one particular village within it. Other Shire settlements include Bywater, Michel Delving, and Tuckborough.
The name also became familiar through Peter Jackson’s film adaptations. The Hobbiton movie set was built near Matamata in New Zealand and became a permanent visitor attraction, but the real location is not Tolkien’s fictional village.
