Joey Tribbiani’s stuffed penguin on Friends is named Hugsy.
Hugsy is introduced as Joey’s treasured bedtime penguin. Joey presents him as a childhood comfort object, and the character’s attachment to the toy becomes a source of comedy because Joey is an adult actor who otherwise projects a confident, carefree image.
The toy appears in stories involving Joey’s possessions and his close friendship with Chandler. Joey’s emotional attachment to Hugsy helps show his softer and more childlike side, especially in contrast with his competitive or flirtatious behavior. The name itself reflects the toy’s role as a cuddling companion.
Hugsy is sometimes confused with other penguin-themed objects or with Joey’s stuffed animals in fan-made merchandise. In the series, however, the canonical name is Hugsy. The penguin is one of several recurring details that make Joey’s apartment life and his friendship with Chandler distinctive.
