What is the name of Google's video conferencing app?

The story behind the answer

The name of Google's video conferencing app is Google Meet. It is a video communication service for online meetings, classes, interviews, presentations, and group calls.

Google formally launched Meet in March 2017 as an enterprise-focused replacement for Google Hangouts. It initially supported meetings of up to 30 participants and was designed to work through web browsers as well as Android and iOS apps. Users can join meetings with a link, making an account unnecessary in some situations when the organizer permits it.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Google expanded Meet access beyond Google Workspace customers and temporarily removed the usual 60-minute limit for many unpaid accounts. Usage grew dramatically between January and April 2020.

Google Chat is primarily a messaging service, not a video-meeting platform. Google Duo was a separate consumer video-calling app, while Hangouts was gradually replaced by Google Meet and Google Chat. In 2022, Google also merged Duo's video-calling experience into Meet.
