What is the name of Google's project using balloons to provide internet?

The story behind the answer

Google’s project using balloons to provide internet was Project Loon.

Announced in 2013 by Google X, Project Loon aimed to connect people in rural, remote, and underserved regions. It used large, solar-powered balloons floating in the stratosphere, roughly 18 to 25 kilometers above Earth. The balloons acted like mobile network towers in the sky, sending signals to special antennas on the ground and relaying data between balloons and internet-connected stations.

The system did not steer balloons with engines. Instead, Loon adjusted a balloon’s altitude to catch different wind currents, using atmospheric data to help position the network. The project tested its technology in New Zealand, Brazil, Sri Lanka, Puerto Rico, and Kenya, including emergency connectivity after disasters.

A common mix-up is Project Fi, which was Google’s mobile virtual network service, while Project Wing concerned drone delivery. Project Loon later became an Alphabet subsidiary called Loon LLC, but Alphabet announced its shutdown in January 2021 because the business was not commercially viable.
