What is the name of Google's original media streaming device for TVs?
Answer
Google Chromecast
Answer
Google Chromecast
Google's original media streaming device for TVs was Google Chromecast.
The first-generation Chromecast was announced and released in the United States on July 24, 2013. It was a small HDMI dongle that connected to a television and streamed content from compatible apps on a phone, tablet, or computer. Its launch price was $35, making it considerably less expensive than many traditional set-top boxes.
Unlike a conventional cable box, the original Chromecast did not have a built-in menu or dedicated remote. Users selected content on another device and sent it to the television through Google's Cast technology. Chrome browser tabs and some Android screens could also be mirrored.
Chromecast is sometimes confused with Google TV or the later Chromecast with Google TV. Those products added a navigable on-screen interface and remote control. Google discontinued the Chromecast line in 2024 and replaced it with the Google TV Streamer, but Chromecast remains the canonical name for Google's original TV streaming device.
