What is the name of Google's mobile operating system?

The story behind the answer

What is the name of Google's mobile operating system? Google's mobile operating system is Android.

Android began with Android Inc., a startup founded in 2003 by Andy Rubin, Rich Miner, Nick Sears, and Chris White. Google acquired the company in 2005 and continued developing the software as an open mobile platform for manufacturers and carriers.

The first commercial Android phone was the HTC Dream, also sold as the T-Mobile G1, released in 2008. It combined a touchscreen with a slide-out physical keyboard and introduced users to Android’s app-based ecosystem. The Android platform is built on a modified Linux kernel and is supported by a broad hardware and developer community.

A common mix-up is treating Android and Google Play as the same thing. Android is the operating system, while Google Play is a distribution and services platform. Some Android devices use Google services, but Android itself can also be adapted for devices without them.
