What is the name of Google's high-speed internet service?

The story behind the answer

Google’s high-speed internet service is called Google Fiber.

Google Fiber is a fiber-optic broadband service operated by Alphabet. It was launched as an ambitious effort to bring gigabit internet directly to homes, using fiber connections that can provide very fast downloads and uploads. The project began with a competitive city-selection process that attracted applications from more than 1,100 communities.

Kansas City, Kansas, was selected as the first Google Fiber community in March 2011, and service became available in the Kansas City area in 2012. Google later announced expansions to places including Austin, Texas, and Provo, Utah. The service eventually expanded beyond its original experimental framing and became part of Alphabet’s Access business.

Google Fiber is not the same as Google Fi Wireless, which is a mobile-phone service. It is also distinct from ordinary cable broadband: fiber sends data through optical fiber rather than relying primarily on coaxial cable. The brand was reworked as GFiber in 2023 while continuing to offer multi-gigabit internet in selected U.S. markets.
