What is the name of Google's free email service?

The story behind the answer

The name of Google's free email service is Gmail.

Gmail was publicly introduced on April 1, 2004, initially as a limited beta invitation service. Its launch attracted attention because Google offered 1 GB of storage—far more than many competing services at the time—and because the April Fool's Day announcement made some people suspect it was a joke.

The service grew from an internal Google project led by engineer Paul Buchheit, whose early work focused on making email searchable. Gmail's conversation view, powerful search, spam filtering, and web-based interface helped distinguish it from older webmail services.

Gmail is sometimes confused with Google Workspace. Gmail is the email service itself; Google Workspace is Google's broader suite of business productivity tools, which includes Gmail. Free personal Gmail accounts also share storage with services such as Google Drive and Google Photos.
