What is the name of Dr. Watson's wife?

The story behind the answer

Dr. Watson’s wife is Mary Morstan. She is introduced in The Sign of the Four, the 1890 Holmes novel, where she hires Holmes to investigate the mystery of her missing father and the Agra Treasure.

Watson and Mary become attracted to each other during the investigation, and Watson proposes after the case is resolved. Mary is portrayed as a blonde former governess whose father, Captain Arthur Morstan, disappeared after serving in the British Army in India. Watson and Mary marry in 1889 according to the commonly accepted chronology of the stories.

Mary’s fate is one of the canon’s quieter mysteries. By the time Holmes returns in “The Adventure of the Empty House,” Watson refers to his “sad bereavement,” implying that Mary has died, although Doyle never states the cause. Some stories contain timeline inconsistencies suggesting Watson may have had another wife, but Mary Morstan is the canonical and standard quiz answer. She is sometimes called Mary Watson after her marriage.
