What is the name of Dorothy's dog?

The story behind the answer

Dorothy’s dog is named Toto.

Toto is Dorothy Gale’s loyal companion in L. Frank Baum’s The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, first published in 1900. He travels with Dorothy when their Kansas farmhouse is carried to Oz by a tornado, and he remains with her on the journey along the Yellow Brick Road.

In Baum’s original book, Toto is described as a small black dog with long, silky hair, but the text does not definitively identify his breed. Illustrations and later adaptations have often led readers to associate him with a Cairn Terrier. The 1939 film used Terry, a female Cairn Terrier, to portray Toto.

Toto is more than a mascot: he helps drive the plot. Dorothy repeatedly takes risks to protect or recover him, and near the end of the story he pulls aside a curtain, exposing the Wizard’s true identity. A common mix-up is assuming the film’s red slippers come from the book; Baum’s original slippers were silver, while Toto’s name remains consistent across the best-known versions.
