Answer
Belt and Road Initiative
China’s global infrastructure project is called the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI).
Chinese President Xi Jinping announced the initiative in 2013. It was designed to improve connections between China and other countries through investments in railways, ports, roads, pipelines, power systems, telecommunications, and related facilities. The name echoes the ancient Silk Road but describes a modern, state-backed program rather than a single route.
The “Belt” refers mainly to overland corridors across Eurasia, while the “Road” refers to maritime links through ports and sea lanes. Projects associated with the initiative have spread across Asia, Africa, Europe, Latin America, and the Middle East.
The BRI is sometimes confused with the Silk Road Fund, which is a financing institution rather than the overall initiative. It is also not the Marshall Plan: that was a post–World War II U.S. aid program for rebuilding Western Europe. Critics have raised concerns about debt, transparency, labor, and environmental effects, while supporters emphasize infrastructure and trade connectivity.
