What is the name of the WTO plurilateral agreement that eliminates tariffs on information technology products?

The story behind the answer

What is the name of the WTO plurilateral agreement that eliminates tariffs on information technology products? The answer is the Information Technology Agreement.

The WTO’s Information Technology Agreement, usually abbreviated ITA, commits participating economies to eliminate and bind customs duties at zero on a defined range of information-technology products. Its coverage includes computers, semiconductors, telecommunications equipment, scientific instruments, storage media, software, and parts and accessories.

The agreement was concluded on 13 December 1996 at the WTO’s first Ministerial Conference in Singapore. It began with 29 participants, and participation later expanded substantially. Because the tariff concessions are incorporated into participants’ WTO schedules and applied on a most-favoured-nation basis, some benefits can extend to suppliers in economies that are not ITA participants.

A common mix-up is the 2015 ITA expansion. That expansion is not a separate agreement with a different name; it broadened the original Information Technology Agreement to cover an additional 201 products, including newer technology categories.
