What is the name of Chanel's classic handbag introduced in 1955?

The story behind the answer

Chanel’s classic handbag introduced in 1955 is the Chanel 2.55.

The name 2.55 refers to February 1955, the month and year when Coco Chanel introduced the updated handbag. Chanel had already experimented with shoulder bags, but the 2.55 made hands-free carrying central to a luxury handbag by using a chain strap inspired in part by military and convent-associated chains.

Its recognizable details include a quilted exterior, a burgundy lining, a rectangular front clasp traditionally called the Mademoiselle Lock, and multiple compartments. The burgundy lining is commonly linked to the uniforms worn at the convent orphanage where Chanel spent part of her childhood.

The 2.55 is often confused with the Chanel Classic Flap. Karl Lagerfeld later adapted the design with an interlocking CC clasp and other changes, while the original 2.55 is identified by its historical February 1955 name and Mademoiselle Lock. Chanel released an exact commemorative copy in February 2005 for the bag’s fiftieth anniversary.
