What is the name of Bob Dylan's autobiography that was released in 2004?

The story behind the answer

Bob Dylan’s 2004 autobiography is Chronicles: Volume One.

Published by Simon & Schuster on October 5, 2004, the book is technically presented as a memoir rather than a conventional cradle-to-present autobiography. Dylan focuses on selected periods of his career instead of recounting every year in order.

Its three main time windows are 1961, when he arrived in New York’s folk scene; 1970, around the making of New Morning; and 1989, during the recording of Oh Mercy. That selective structure lets Dylan mix career history with reflections on songwriting, relationships, and public mythology.

Chronicles: Volume One was 304 pages in its first hardcover edition and became a major bestseller, spending 19 weeks on The New York Times hardcover nonfiction list. It was also a finalist for the 2004 National Book Critics Circle Award in autobiography. The “Volume One” label suggested future installments, but no further volumes have appeared.
