Beyoncé’s 2016 visual album about infidelity, heritage, and Black womanhood is Lemonade.
Lemonade was released on April 23, 2016, after an HBO premiere of its accompanying hour-long film. The project combines songs, poetry, spoken narration, and striking visual chapters. Its themes include betrayal, grief, anger, reconciliation, family history, race, and the experiences of Black women.
The album features songs such as “Formation,” “Sorry,” “Hold Up,” and “Freedom.” It includes guest appearances by artists including Kendrick Lamar, Jack White, The Weeknd, and James Blake. The work drew on many musical styles, including rock, country, blues, pop, and R&B.
A frequent mix-up is treating Lemonade as only a conventional music video collection. Beyoncé presented it as a unified visual album, with the film and record designed to deepen each other. Lemonade received widespread critical acclaim and earned a Grammy nomination for Album of the Year, while “Formation” won Best Music Video.
