What is the MPAA rating of Se7en?

The story behind the answer

Se7en has an MPAA rating of R. The rating reflects the film’s graphic violence, disturbing images, pervasive language, and dark crime-horror subject matter.

Released in 1995, Se7en follows detectives David Mills and William Somerset as they investigate a serial killer whose murders are staged around the seven deadly sins. Brad Pitt plays Mills, Morgan Freeman plays Somerset, and Kevin Spacey plays the killer, John Doe.

The film’s rating is often remembered alongside its notorious violence, but Se7en’s impact comes as much from implication, atmosphere, and psychological dread as from what it shows directly. Director David Fincher and cinematographer Darius Khondji created a perpetually rain-soaked, grimy city that intensifies the story’s sense of moral decay.

The R rating is not the same as NC-17: an R-rated film permits viewers under 17 when accompanied by a parent or adult guardian, while NC-17 indicates that no one 17 or younger is admitted. Se7en was released theatrically as an R-rated film in the United States.
