What is the most distant human-made object from Earth as of 2024?
Answer
Voyager 1
Answer
Voyager 1
Voyager 1 is the most distant human-made object from Earth as of 2024. Launched by NASA on September 5, 1977, it traveled past Jupiter and Saturn before heading outward on a trajectory that carried it beyond the heliosphere.
Voyager 1 became more distant than Pioneer 10 in 1998 and has continued pulling ahead because it is traveling faster away from the Sun. Its distance is usually measured in astronomical units, with one AU equal to the average distance between Earth and the Sun. Radio signals take many hours to travel between Earth and the spacecraft.
The probe crossed the heliopause on August 25, 2012, becoming the first spacecraft confirmed to enter interstellar space. Voyager 2 also reached interstellar space, but it follows a different trajectory and remains behind Voyager 1. New Horizons is much younger and is still exploring the outer Solar System.
