What is the model name of the Beetle with MacPherson strut front suspension?

The story behind the answer

The Beetle with MacPherson strut front suspension was the Super Beetle.

Volkswagen introduced the Super Beetle as the 1302 in 1970, giving the long-running Type 1 a substantially revised front end. Ordinary Beetles used torsion-bar front suspension, while the Super Beetle adopted MacPherson struts, lower control arms and a stabilizer bar.

The new layout freed space in the front luggage compartment. Volkswagen could mount the spare wheel horizontally rather than diagonally, and the longer nose helped nearly double usable luggage capacity. The Super Beetle also had a slightly longer wheelbase, although the extra length was concentrated ahead of the windscreen.

A common mix-up is the model numbering. The first Super Beetle was the 1302, while the updated version introduced in 1972 was the 1303, best recognized by its curved windscreen. Both are Super Beetles, but “1303” is not the general name for every Beetle with this suspension.
