What is the minimum width of a rugby union goalpost crossbar?
Answer
5.6 metres
Answer
5.6 metres
The minimum width of a rugby union goalpost crossbar is 5.6 metres.
Under the Laws of the Game, the goalposts stand on the goal line and are connected by a horizontal crossbar. The inside edges of the two upright posts must be at least 5.6 metres apart. The crossbar is positioned 3 metres above the ground.
The goalposts and crossbar form the target for conversions, penalty kicks and drop goals. A kick must pass over the crossbar and between the uprights to score, provided the ball has not touched the ground after being kicked.
The 5.6-metre minimum is different from the width of the field itself and from the distance between the touchlines. Rugby union goalposts also have no fixed maximum height in the same way that the crossbar has a specified minimum elevation and the uprights must extend sufficiently above it.
