The minimum weight of a 2024 Formula One car, including the driver and excluding fuel, was 798 kg.
The FIA’s 2024 technical regulations set the car’s minimum mass at 798 kg. The rule applied throughout a competition, and the measurement used dry-weather tyres when required. Fuel was excluded because its quantity changes substantially during a race.
The regulations also required the driver, seat and driving equipment to total at least 80 kg. A lighter driver could therefore be supplemented with ballast, ensuring that driver size did not create an unfair weight advantage. That driver allowance was part of the 798-kg overall figure, not an additional 80 kg added afterward.
The figure is often confused with the 800-kg limit introduced for 2025, when the minimum driver allowance rose from 80 to 82 kg. The 798-kg rule also became a major talking point after George Russell’s 2024 Belgian Grand Prix car was found underweight and disqualified.
