The minimum number of matching candies needed for a basic clear in Candy Crush Saga is three.
Candy Crush Saga is built around match-three gameplay: the player swaps adjacent candies to form a horizontal or vertical row of at least three candies of the same color. Once the match is made, those candies disappear, the pieces above fall into the empty spaces, and new candies enter from the top of the board. Falling pieces can create additional automatic matches called cascades.
Three matching candies produce the standard clear. Larger combinations create special effects: matching four candies can produce a striped candy, while certain arrangements of five can create more powerful special candies. These enhanced matches are why players sometimes remember four or five as important numbers, but neither is the threshold for an ordinary match.
The game’s levels add goals and obstacles, including clearing jelly, collecting ingredients, or reaching a target score within a limited number of moves. Those objectives change how a match is used, not the basic rule that three same-colored candies are enough to make a normal clear.
