In Donkey Kong Country, Donkey Kong can carry a maximum of 99 bananas before the counter reaches its reward threshold.
Bananas are the game’s standard collectible and appear as individual fruit or in bunches worth multiple bananas. Once the player collects 100 bananas, the game awards an extra life and the banana count resets, so 99 is the highest number normally displayed or carried at one time.
This is easy to confuse with 100 because collecting 100 is the important gameplay milestone. However, 100 is not a stored maximum: it is the amount needed to trigger the bonus life. The same banana system applies to both Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong as they travel through the levels.
Donkey Kong Country debuted on the Super Nintendo Entertainment System in 1994. Rare’s pre-rendered 3D graphics, converted into detailed sprites through its Advanced Computer Modelling technique, became one of the game’s defining technical features. Bananas also help guide players toward routes, secrets, and bonus rooms.
