The maximum length of the playing field in rugby union, excluding the in-goal areas, is 100 metres.
World Rugby’s field laws specify that the playing enclosure is rectangular, with the field of play measuring up to 100 metres between the goal lines. Each in-goal area extends beyond a goal line and can be up to 22 metres deep. Therefore, the full playing enclosure can be longer than 100 metres when the in-goal areas are included.
The field also has a maximum width of 70 metres, while the goal lines and touchlines define the principal boundaries. Markings identify the halfway line, 22-metre lines, 10-metre lines, and other areas used to restart and manage play.
This measurement is often confused with the total length of the venue surface. A rugby pitch’s field of play is not the same as the entire rectangle from dead-ball line to dead-ball line, because the in-goal areas sit beyond the goal lines.
