What is the maximum length of Lake Erie?

The story behind the answer

The maximum length of Lake Erie is 388 kilometres (241 miles).

Lake Erie is the fourth-largest of North America’s five Great Lakes by surface area and the southernmost of the group. It stretches roughly east–west between Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, and Ontario. Its elongated shape gives it a much greater length than width: its maximum width is about 92 kilometres.

Lake Erie is also the shallowest of the Great Lakes, with an average depth of about 19 metres. That shallow basin allows it to warm quickly in summer and freeze more readily than the deeper lakes. These characteristics have influenced commercial fishing, shipping, storms, and coastal communities around the lake.

The lake drains through the Niagara River into Lake Ontario. Buffalo, Cleveland, Erie, and Toledo are among the major cities situated on or near its shores, while Long Point and Point Pelee are notable geographic features along its margins.
