Android 14 was the major Android version released in October 2023.
Google released Android 14 publicly on October 4, 2023, making it the fourteenth major version of the operating system and the twenty-first Android version overall. The release arrived alongside the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro, which were the first phones to ship with Android 14 preinstalled.
Android 14 focused on refinements rather than a complete visual overhaul. It added Ultra HDR photo support, expanded lock-screen customization, larger maximum font scaling, improved large-screen taskbar behavior, and the ability to use some Android phones as webcams. It also introduced tighter restrictions on installing very old apps, partly to reduce malware risks.
A common mix-up is confusing the major version number with the API level: Android 14 uses API level 34. Android 13 came before it, while Android 15 followed it in 2024.
