What is the Madison event in track cycling named after?

The story behind the answer

The Madison event in track cycling is named after Madison Square Garden.

The race developed in the United States around the turn of the twentieth century, when six-day track races became popular entertainment. Competitors rode for long periods, and teams eventually used relay-style exchanges so one rider could rest while the other raced.

Madison Square Garden in New York hosted prominent six-day events, and the venue gave the discipline its name. The race is also known as a two-person team pursuit. Riders take turns racing, usually by pushing or slinging a teammate into action with a hand contact.

Modern Madison races are decided by points scored in intermediate sprints and by gaining laps on other teams. The event returned to the Olympic programme at the Tokyo 2020 Games, held in 2021, after being absent since 2008. It is not named after Madison Avenue or the American state of Wisconsin.
