What is the longest-running Lego theme?

The story behind the answer

LEGO Technic is generally recognized as the longest-running LEGO theme.

The line began in 1977 under names such as Expert Builder and Technical Sets, depending on the market. It was designed for builders who wanted more mechanically detailed models than ordinary LEGO System sets offered. Technic introduced specialized beams, axles, gears, pins, and connectors that could reproduce functions such as steering, suspension, transmissions, and working engines.

The theme became known as LEGO Technic in the early 1980s. Unlike many LEGO themes that were launched and later retired, Technic has remained an active product line across decades, making its continuous history especially significant. It has expanded from basic mechanical models into complex cars, trucks, aircraft, construction machines, and licensed vehicles.

The wording can cause confusion because LEGO has older product lines, including DUPLO and classic brick ranges. However, when “theme” means a continuing named LEGO theme, Technic is the standard answer. LEGO City is also long-running, but it began later, in 1978, after Technic’s predecessor had already appeared.
