In what year did the first Legoland park open?

The first Legoland park opened in 1968. Legoland Billund Resort opened on 7 June 1968 in Billund, Denmark, beside the Lego Group’s original factory.

The park was created after the Lego factory began attracting visitors who wanted to see its elaborate models. Godtfred Kirk Christiansen developed the idea of a dedicated attraction to showcase Lego and draw more attention to the company’s toys. Its main early feature was Miniland, a miniature world built from Lego elements.

Legoland Billund opened on a 14-acre site and welcomed about 625,000 visitors during its shortened first season. That immediate popularity helped establish the theme-park concept as an important extension of the Lego brand.

A common mix-up is confusing the first Legoland with later parks. Legoland Windsor opened in 1996, while parks in Germany, Japan, the United States and other countries followed much later. Billund remains the original Legoland park and the one most closely connected with Lego’s history.
