The event is held on Daytona International Speedway's 2.5-mile tri-oval, so the scheduled distance is normally completed in 200 laps. The race's name directly reflects this 500-mile format, which has been used since the inaugural event in 1959.

The Daytona 500 grew out of stock-car races held on the old Daytona Beach Road Course, where drivers competed partly on the beach and partly on nearby roads. Moving to the purpose-built speedway created a more consistent and faster setting for NASCAR's premier race.

The advertised distance is not always the exact distance completed. Overtime finishes, introduced when a late caution prevents a normal conclusion, can add extra laps. The 2023 Daytona 500, for example, lasted 212 laps and covered 530 miles. Rain and other interruptions have also shortened some editions, but 500 miles remains the standard scheduled distance.
