Bristol opened in 1961 as a paved half-mile track, but its current measured length is 0.533 miles, or about 0.858 kilometers. The oval has four turns, with progressive banking ranging from 24 to 28 degrees. The straightaways are also banked, from four degrees at the bottom to eight degrees at the top.

Its small size produces unusually high lap counts and frequent traffic, while the concrete surface and steep turns allow Cup cars to run at very high speeds for a short oval. Bristol has also hosted temporary dirt-track configurations, but those used the same 0.533-mile distance. The nearby Bristol Dragway is a separate quarter-mile facility, so its length should not be confused with the main NASCAR oval.
