What is the largest national park in the Amazon Rainforest?

The story behind the answer

Tumucumaque Mountains National Park is the largest national park in the Amazon Rainforest.

Located in northern Brazil near the borders with French Guiana and Suriname, the park protects approximately 38,874 square kilometres of tropical forest. It lies mainly in the states of Amapá and Pará and forms part of a broad network of protected areas in the Guiana Shield region.

The park was created in 2002 and is managed as a strictly protected conservation unit. Its landscapes include dense rainforest, rivers, granite outcrops and isolated mountains. The remote terrain has helped preserve habitats for jaguars, giant otters, harpy eagles, primates and many other species.

Tumucumaque is sometimes mistaken for a park in the Peruvian or Ecuadorian Amazon because those countries also contain very large protected areas. It is Brazilian territory, and its name refers to the Tumucumaque mountain region along Brazil’s northern frontier. Its area is comparable to that of a small country.
