What is the largest island in the Persian Gulf, belonging to Iran?
Answer
Qeshm Island
Answer
Qeshm Island
Qeshm Island is the largest island in the Persian Gulf and belongs to Iran.
Qeshm lies just off Iran’s southern coast in the Strait of Hormuz. It is separated from the mainland by the narrow Khuran Strait and is part of Hormozgan Province. The island is known for rugged coastlines, salt caves, mangrove forests, valleys, and distinctive eroded landforms.
Qeshm has long held strategic importance because of its position near the entrance to the Persian Gulf. Its communities have also depended historically on fishing, seafaring, trade, and commerce with neighboring coastal regions. The Qeshm Free Zone was established to encourage investment and trade.
Kish Island is another well-known Iranian island and a popular resort and free-trade area, but it is much smaller than Qeshm. Bahrain is an island country and archipelago, yet its main island is not the Persian Gulf’s largest island.
