What is the largest island in the British Isles?

The story behind the answer

Great Britain is the largest island in the British Isles.

The island covers about 209,331 square kilometres and contains the countries of England, Scotland and Wales. It is the largest island in Europe and ranks among the world’s largest islands. Its highest point is Ben Nevis in Scotland, at 1,345 metres.

The British Isles is a geographical archipelago comprising Great Britain, Ireland and more than 1,000 smaller islands and named rocks. Ireland is the second-largest island in the group, while Anglesey and the Isle of Man are much smaller islands. The term “Great Britain” should not be confused with the United Kingdom: the UK includes Northern Ireland, which is on the island of Ireland.

The name can also have a political sense, referring collectively to England, Scotland and Wales. In the quiz’s geographical sense, however, it means the large North Atlantic island itself—not the whole United Kingdom.
