What is the largest island in Mexico's Revillagigedo Islands?
Answer
Socorro Island
Answer
Socorro Island
Socorro Island is the largest island in Mexico’s Revillagigedo Islands.
Socorro is a volcanic island about 600 kilometres off Mexico’s western coast. It measures roughly 132 square kilometres, making it far larger than Clarion, San Benedicto, or tiny Roca Partida. Its highest point is Cerro Evermann, a volcanic summit rising about 1,150 metres. The island’s last recorded eruption occurred in 1993.
Spanish explorers encountered Socorro in the sixteenth century, and the island acquired several names before “Socorro” became established. Its isolation has produced many endemic species, including the Socorro mockingbird, Socorro wren, and Socorro parakeet. The Socorro dove is considered extinct in the wild and survives only in captivity. A naval station operates on the island, but most of its terrain remains wild and difficult to reach.
The Revillagigedo group contains four principal islands. It became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2016 and a Mexican national park and marine reserve in 2017, protecting exceptionally diverse marine life around the archipelago.
