What is the largest island in Lake Huron?
Answer
Manitoulin Island
Answer
Manitoulin Island
Manitoulin Island is the largest island in Lake Huron.
Located in the Canadian province of Ontario, Manitoulin Island covers about 2,766 square kilometres. It is the world’s largest island in a freshwater lake and is separated from Ontario’s Bruce Peninsula by Georgian Bay and the North Channel.
Manitoulin is notable for having many inland lakes of its own. The largest, Lake Manitou, is often described as the world’s largest lake on a freshwater island. The island is also home to several Anishinaabe communities, including Wiikwemkoong and M’Chigeeng.
A common mix-up is confusing Manitoulin Island with Isle Royale, which is in Lake Superior, or Drummond Island, which is the second-largest island in Lake Huron. Manitoulin’s exceptional size makes it one of the Great Lakes’ best-known geographic features.
