What is the largest Buddhist temple in the world, located in Indonesia?

The story behind the answer

The largest Buddhist temple in the world, located in Indonesia, is Borobudur.

Borobudur is a monumental Buddhist temple complex on the island of Java, near present-day Magelang in Central Java. It was built during the Sailendra dynasty, probably between the 8th and 9th centuries, when powerful Buddhist and Hindu states flourished across the Indonesian archipelago.

The monument is arranged as a stepped pyramid with nine stacked platforms topped by a central dome. Its three symbolic levels represent the Buddhist cosmological realms of desire, form, and formlessness. Visitors encounter hundreds of Buddha statues and extensive relief panels that depict teachings, stories, daily life, and the journey toward enlightenment.

Borobudur was gradually abandoned or neglected after political and religious changes on Java, and vegetation covered much of the site. Its existence became widely known internationally after its rediscovery in 1814 under Thomas Stamford Raffles. Indonesia and UNESCO led a major restoration completed in 1983. It remains an active pilgrimage site, especially during Vesak celebrations.
