What is the Japanese term for the professional sumo championship title?

The story behind the answer

The Japanese term for a professional sumo championship title is yusho.

A yusho is awarded to the wrestler with the best record in a division at the end of a tournament. In the top division, the champion receives the Emperor’s Cup, while champions in the lower divisions receive corresponding championship prizes.

If wrestlers finish with equal records, a playoff called a kettei-sen determines the champion. A wrestler who wins every bout in a tournament earns a zensho-yusho, meaning an undefeated championship.

Yusho should not be confused with sansho. Sansho are special prizes for notable performances by eligible makuuchi wrestlers, whereas the yusho is the championship for the division winner.
