The 2020 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500’s supercharged V8 produces 760 hp.
The engine is Ford’s hand-built 5.2-liter Predator V8, fitted with a 2.65-liter Roots-type supercharger. It produces its peak power at 7,300 rpm and develops 625 lb-ft of torque at 5,000 rpm. Unlike the naturally aspirated, flat-plane-crank Voodoo V8 in the GT350, the GT500 uses a cross-plane crankshaft.
The GT500 was unveiled at the 2019 North American International Auto Show as a 2020 model-year car. Its seven-speed dual-clutch transmission was a major departure from the six-speed manual used in earlier GT500 generations, allowing rapid shifts and helping the car deliver a claimed 0–60-mph time of about 3.3 seconds. Cooling was also a major engineering challenge, so Ford enlarged the car’s grilles, vents, brakes, and cooling hardware.
A common mix-up is confusing the standard GT500 with later Shelby American conversions. The GT500 Signature Edition exceeded 800 hp, while the GT500KR exceeded 900 hp, but the regular production 2020 GT500 was rated at 760 hp.
