What is the highest natural point in Bahrain?
Answer
Jabal al-Dukhan
Answer
Jabal al-Dukhan
Jabal al-Dukhan is the highest natural point in Bahrain.
Jabal al-Dukhan, meaning “Mountain of Smoke” in Arabic, rises to about 134 metres above sea level in central Bahrain. Although called a mountain, it is a low rocky hill relative to the peaks found in most Middle Eastern countries. Its name is associated with the haze that can surround the summit during Bahrain’s hot, humid conditions.
The hill lies near Bahrain’s oil-producing region and is close to the site of Bahrain’s first oil well, drilled in 1932. That discovery began the modern development of Bahrain’s petroleum industry and made the country the first in the Arabian Gulf to discover oil.
Jabal al-Dukhan is sometimes confused with Jabal ad-Dukhan, an alternative transliteration of the same Arabic name. It should not be confused with Jabal Al-Nour near Mecca or Jabal Shams in Oman. Bahrain’s landscape is generally low and flat, so this modest hill is nevertheless its highest natural point.
